Allegri Ladies Choir began with a simple vision: to create an inclusive, audition-free space where local women could experience the joy and benefits of singing together. From humble beginnings with 11 brave singers performing just six weeks after forming, the choir quickly grew into a vibrant community. Through diverse choral music and performances, members gain confidence, creativity, and connection, often describing their experience as both empowering and therapeutic. The choir fosters lasting friendships and welcomes all voices, including those hesitant to join traditional vocal groups. 

In 2023, the Ladies Choir celebrated a decade of music making with a memorable tour to the USA. Highlights included a full concert programme performed in the Irish Repertory Theatre in New York, singing at the Washington & Lee University in Lexington, Virginia, and a private performance at the Irish Ambassador’s Residence in Washington DC.

Founded in 2017, Allegri Junior Choir offers young people aged Primary 4 to Year 8 a fun, inclusive space to build confidence, develop their talents and musicianship, and perform in exciting settings. Singers begin their journey by building strong musical foundations and discovering the power of group singing. From recording with singer-songwriter ROE to taking part in outreach projects on mental health and cultural diversity, members experience music as a powerful tool for expression and connection. Their annual summer scheme combines singing, drama, dance, and outdoor activities, while commissioned works like Beauty’s in Your Singing highlight the choir’s commitment to creativity and well-being. As their confidence and ability grow, many progress into the Allegri Youth Choir, where they face new challenges and exciting opportunities.

In the Allegri Youth choir, singers in Year 9 to Year 14 take the next steps in their musical journey, developing vocal technique, part-singing skills and performance artistry in a fun, encouraging environment. They explore more advanced repertoire and musicianship, blending musical expression with discipline and teamwork. Performance opportunities are more ambitious, often at prestigious events, showcasing their evolving voices. This transition fosters not only musical growth but also personal maturity, as singers become mentors, leaders and passionate ambassadors for music within the wider Derry community. Recent highlights have included a performance of Benjamin Britten’s Noye’s Fludde alongside students from Oakgrove Integrated Primary School, St Mary’s College and Orchestra Northwest; and a showcase at the Seamus Heaney HomePlace.
